Pitching In: Week 3

10 Must-Start Pitchers for Week 3:

Masahiro Tanaka (vs. CHC / @ TB)
Gerrit Cole (@ CIN / vs. MIL)
Cliff Lee (vs. ATL / @ COL)
Yordano Ventura (@ HOU / vs. MIN)
Ervin Santana (@ PHI / @ NYM)
Matt Garza (vs. STL / @ PIT)
Stephen Strasburg (@ MIA / vs. STL)
Chris Tillman (vs. TB)
Zack Greinke (vs. AZ)
Tim Hudson (@ SD)

Ervin Santana came into Atlanta being sorely needed by an ailing staff, and he was the cure in his first start. He keeps it rolling here with two starts in Week 3. If you were lucky enough to pick him up off the waiver wire in Week 1 this is the time to start him with confidence. Garza is a pitcher who has had a bit of bad luck in his starts so far, but he has good history against both of his opponents, and he has pitched well. Both are wonderful starts this week.

Avoid: Scott Kazmir (triceps tightness), A.J. Burnett (groin issues)

5 Recommended Relievers for Week 3:

Huston Street (SD)
Grant Balfour (TB)
Jose Valverde (NYM)
Jonathan Papelbon (PHI)
Craig Kimbrel (ATL)

The closer position has been volatile of late, with Jim Johnson imploding, Kenley Jansen suddenly vulnerable, and David Robertson coming up lame. But Street has been excellent so far this year, and Valverde is a great fill-in for Parnell, who might even be out for the season. Papelbon has turned a corner, and Kimbrel is Kimbrel. If you need a closer off the waiver wire, you can still grab someone like Matt Lindstrom or Francisco Rodriguez.
