Pitching In: Week 8

Wow, my pitching was my downfall in week 7. In fact, several quality pitchers had a rough time. From Clayton Kershaw, who was yanked in the second inning of his last start, to Scott Kazmir, who was ejected in the second inning of his last start, and the list goes on. But what really crushed me on the pitching end in week 7 was Tim Hudson having his start pushed back to the following week, and so landing me zero points in the process. To add insult to injury, Chris Tillman was sitting on my bench when he racked up 32.5 points. Ouch.

And even with all of that, I only lost by .5 fantasy points. That’s because I also have Zack Greinke (30 points), C.J. Wilson (36.5 points), and Matt Cain (20.5 points). That’s the key with having multiple top options. Half a point away. I’ll make that up this week.

With that being said, here are the pitchers you can count on in Week 8:

10 Must-Start Pitchers for Week 8

Justin Verlander (@ CLE / vs. TEX)
Adam Wainwright (vs. ARI / @ CIN)
Masahiro Tanaka (@ CHC / @ CHW)
Julio Teheran (vs. MIL / vs. COL)
Dallas Keuchel (@ LAA / @ SEA)
Jason Vargas (vs. CHW / @ LAA)
Stephen Strasburg (vs. CIN / @ PIT)
Max Scherzer (@ CLE)
James Shields (@ LAA)
Sonny Gray (@ TB)

5 Recommended Relievers for Week 8

Francisco Rodriguez (MIL)
Aroldis Chapman (CIN)
Rafael Soriano (WAS)
Joe Nathan (DET)
Alfredo Simon (CIN)*

*Simon has the advantage of being a starting pitcher who is also eligible as a reliever. Every year we get at least a few pitchers in this category who you can slot in as a reliever and in essence get an extra starter for the price of a reliever. What I like about Simon is his WHIP, which remains low even though he hasn’t been quite as dominant consistently as he was at the very beginning of the season. He is the only eligible starter who I would recommend in the reliever slot this week, and he has a good matchup this week against the Nationals.
